को हठात् अपनी और आकृष्ट करती है।
मेघदूत
संस्कृत साहित्य का वह जाज्वल्यमान हीरक है, जिसकी प्रभा समय के प्रवाह से और भी अधिक
बहती जाती है, वह बड़ी ही आनंदमयी घड़ी थी, जब महाकवि कालिदास ने इस अमर काव्य की रचना
की थी, बाह्य प्रकृति की मनोरम झाँकी प्रस्तुत करने में अन्तस्तल में सतत उदय होने
वाले भावों के चित्रण में यह काव्य अपनी तुलना नही रखता ।किसी विरहविधुरा प्रेयसी के
पास मेघ को प्रेम का संदेशवाहक दूत बनाकर भेजने की कल्पना ही विश्व के साहित्य में
अपूर्व कोमल तथा ह्रदयावर्जक है । वाल्मीकीय रामायण में अशोक वाटिका में रावण के द्वारा
अपह्रत जनकनन्दिनी के पास हनुमान को भेजना ,तथा महाभारत में हंस के द्वारा दमयन्ती
के ह्रदय में राजा नल के प्रति प्रणयभाव के प्रादुर्भाव की कथा अवश्यमेव कालीदास से
प्राचीनतर है, परन्तु इनमें चेतन पदार्थो से ही दौत्य कर्म की सम्मति दीख पड़ती है
। किसी अचेतन वस्तु को प्रेम प्रसंग के दौत्य कर्म के लिए भेजना तथा प्रणय में गाढ़
अन्त्यातिरेक की सद्यः अभिव्यक्ति करना सचमुच एक प्रतिभासम्पन्न कवि की मौलिक कल्पना
है । ्मेघ के दूत बताने में सुन्दर मुदित की सत्ता है। मेघ तो सुखते हुए पौधों को जल
से सींच कर झड़ने से बचाता है, और यहाँ तो एक जीता प्राणी विरह के मारे अधमरा बना हुवा
सिसक रहा है, और वह भी किसी धनकुबेर के क्रोध का भाजन बना हुवा प्रेयसी से वियुक्त
होकर जीवन यापन कर रहा है। फलतः वह विशेष रुप से मेघ की दया का पात्र है, अनुकम्पा
का भाजन है।
मेघदूत
बाह्य प्रकृति के सौन्दर्य तथा कमनीयता का उज्जवल प्रदर्शन है। तो उत्तर मेघ मानव ह्रदय
के सौन्दर्य तथा अभिरामता का विमल चित्रण है। यक्ष का प्रेम-संदेश उसके कोमल ह्रदय
का स्वाभाविक स्नेह का तथा नैसर्गिक सहानुभूति का एक मनोरम प्रतीक है। और इस उदात्त
प्रेम का अभिव्यंजक काव्य सुषमा का भाव सौष्ठव
से मण्डित यह ग्रन्थ रस का अक्षम्य स्त्रोत है, जिसकी भाव द्वारा सुखने की अपेक्षा
प्रतिदिन आनन्दातिरेक से वृद्धि ही होती जा रही है।

लक्षण कालीदास की कविता में अपना अस्तित्व धारण किए हुए है।
कालीदास
की निरीक्षण शक्ति अत्यन्त सूक्ष्म तथा पैनी है । उनका प्रकृति वर्णन वैज्ञानिक तथा
प्रतिभामण्डित है। इसके रमणीय उदाहरण सर्वत्र दीख पड़ते है। पर्वत के झरणों पर जब दिन
के समय सूर्य की किरणें पड़ती है, तब उनमें इन्द्र धनुष चमकने लगता है।
कालीदास
के प्रकृति वर्णन में अनेक वैशिष्टय है, कवि मानव सौन्दर्य की तीव्रता तथा यथार्थता
के अभिव्यंजन के निमित्त प्रकृति का आश्रय लेता है। तो कही यह प्रकृति के ऊपर मानव
भावों तथा व्यापारों का ललित आरोप करता है। कहीं वह प्रकृति और मानव के बीच परस्पर
गाढ़ मैत्री सहज सहानुभुति तथा रमणीय रम्यात्मक वृत्ति का सम्बोध जोड़ता है, तो कहीं
प्रकृति को भगवान की ललित लीला का निकेतन मानकर आनन्द से विभोर हो जाता है। निसंन्देह
कालीदास प्रकृति के अन्तस्थल के सूक्ष्म पारखी महाकवि है। जिनकी दृष्टि प्रकृति के
सौम्य रुप माधुर्य तम प्रवृति स्निग्ध सौन्दर्य के ऊपर रीझती है, तथा उग्रता और भीषणता
से सदा पराड़्मुख रहती है।
कालीदास का मेघदूत वास्तव में एक अमुल्य रत्न है।
हजारों वर्ष बीत जाने पर भी आज भी इसको पढ़कर मन आनन्द से विभोर हो जाता है। आखों के
समक्ष पुरा घटना क्रम परिलक्षित होता है।ऐसे महान कवि कालीदास को मेरा शत्-शत् नमन्।
